Weary and isolated from the pandemic, in June 2020 Singer/Songwriter Ben Thomas and his family moved out of their Orange County condo to experience the beauty of the West Coast of the US. Along the way he wrote and recorded seven intimate, earthy songs in the back of an RV equipped with just an iPad and a guitar. His desire was to capture the essence of the songs as they were being written.
“Some of my favorite records the lo-fi gritty ones that make you feel like you’re sitting with the songwriter as they pen the ideas. Think of the first albums by Elliott Smith or Iron & Wine, or the simple warmth of Nick Drake. On recordings like these you can almost feel the electric excitement of the writer hitting 'record' just as the songs are being discovered” - Ben Thomas
The songs themselves on “Seas & Trees…" capture both the spirit of the wandering soul - seeking to connect with nature and the rhythms of the earth for inspiration, as well as the realities of an artist in his early 40’s dealing with the practicalities of relationships, and the continued search for a true identity.
The EP is Thomas’ first release since 2019’s “The Way Up”, a haunting yet hopeful examination of our relationship with loss, failure and death. An album which, for many, became a fitting soundtrack for the past 12 months. Accompanying the release of the “Seas & Trees & Mythical Creatures” , Thomas is releasing a digital scrapbook featuring journal entries, lyrics and photos of his family’s travels.
